Term 4, 2024
Tuesdays, 6.30pm - 9.00pm
Develop the skills to create figures and animals competently, from simplified forms to more detailed works.
Class Details - Term 4:
During term 4 we will be taking things up a little by building standing animals. Their legs will be hollow and bodies made from hollow spheres or shaped slabs.
Sarah will be demonstrating by making a horse. You can follow along step by step by making a horse too or make any other type of animal you would like - but do remember if the animal you choose has thin legs it will need to be very carefully designed to support the weight of the clay. We’ll work on this together. It will probably be best to work on more than one sculpture at a time so the clay can rest and harden when required.
The key objective is to gain the skills to build animals on your own outside of class, using slabs and pinch pots.
The key to building successful sculptures that really look like the type of animal you want it to be, is to find the key characteristics of their anatomy and emphasis them. This class will help you to do this.
What skills are needed?
Fundamental understanding of how to handle and join clay. This term we will be building hollow forms and manipulating them into shape.
Tools required:
Banding wheel (supplied)
Rolling pin (supplied)
Clay knife
Modelling tools (supplied by tutor)
Plastic bag to wrap work
Spray bottle for water
Small container for vinegar/clay mixture (= clay glue)
1 bag W2505 White stoneware clay (supplied)
Optional: cuticle sticks
