Please be aware that work that is not clearly identified will not be fired. If you are using a makers mark that is not in the kiln book please leave a note on the kiln book so we can add this to our list.
If you are not wanting your work to be placed on top of the kilns prior to being fired please ensure that it is bone dry when placed into the kiln room. With the current season and slow drying times we need to ensure that all work is completely dry before going in the kiln to avoid any disasters. We are looking for some new members of the team to help us with pricing the members bisque once fired. 2 people are needed - if you are interested please contact Rod directly via rodgraham1948@gmail.com This Saturday and Sunday (8th and 9th July) all unclaimed work will be removed from the kiln room and will not be recoverable. Please ensure that you check to see if any of your work is here before then. The unclaimed work is located on the floor under the 1200 glaze shelves, immediately on your left when entering the kiln room. Quick reminder that any refires are charged to your kiln account, as these are still taking up room in the kiln and therefore have a charge associated with this. If you have any work that is being completed and needed for Stargaze please leave a note on this and it will be prioritised for firing. All kilns are now back up and running and the backlog is almost cleared :) Allow 2 - 3 weeks turn around for work being placed into kiln room. Starglaze is currently first priority followed by Member/Class work from last term, Workshop from last term and then holiday programme work. Following Stargaze there will be a clear out of all bisque in the kiln room. More information will be provided about this closer to the time, however we are looking to clear out bisqued work that has been sitting in the kiln room for months to make room for more work coming through. If you have any bisque that is not being glazed within the next 2 weeks if would be much appreciated if this could be removed from the shelves.

Lower Hutt Sculptor Triumphs at the NZ Art Show, Securing Coveted $15,000 Prize – NZ Art Show The NZ Art Show, a prestigious annual event showcasing New Zealand’s artistic prowess, is thrilled to announce a triumph for one talented sculptor. With esteemed artist and collector Lynne Sandri as the judge, the RT Nelson Awards for Sculptor awards ceremony bestowed a grand total of $20,000 in prizes, including the prestigious $15,000 premier prize for outstanding creative talent and craftsmanship. Additionally, five highly commended prizes of $1,000 each were awarded to commendable artists. Amongst the fierce competition, the ultimate prize of $15,000 was claimed by Lower Hutt Hutt artist Anna Campbell with her ceramic and mixed media piece ‘Workshop #1’. Consisting of a road cone, gas bottle and dirty rag – all made of ceramic – on an aged wooden shelf, the work is inspired by still life compositions in her studio. ‘Anna’s work is mindful of her surroundings and uses simple solid form and clean lines to create her own still life …of the life around her – the ordinary in the everyday,’ said Lynne. ‘The messy nature of useful objects on a shelf in a functioning workshop/studio which could now easily sit comfortably in a new environment of either a carefully curated living room or gallery.’ The NZ Art Show commends the winner for their remarkable dedication, skill, and imaginative approach, which have culminated in an awe-inspiring sculpture. A total of 52 sculptures by 35 accomplished artists have been selected as finalists, representing the finest examples of sculptural artistry in New Zealand. NEXT FIRING DOWNDRAFT GAS KILN :: May 25, 2023
All work on shelves :: Thursday 29 th June, 5pm Kiln loading :: Friday 30 th June, 9.30am Kiln firing :: Sunday 2 nd July, start time 7.45am Kiln unloading :: Tuesday 4 th July, 2.00 pm THIS WILL BE THE LAST FIRING BEFORE STARGLAZE The last kiln firing was on Friday 19 th May , with unloading on Sunday 21 st May. Members of the cooking with gas team attended and assisted with the loading, firing and unloading. Other members also helped with the unloading, and my thanks to all who helped. It was a good firing; some precautions taken included an increasing use of setters and thinner application of glazes, particularly Winnies blue, with a wider sponging of foot-rings. Some of the work from Duncan Shearer’s workshop was thickly glazed with a tenmoku style glaze and ran on to the shelves, luckily not seriously fusing with the shelves so could be removed and largely repaired with some grinding. So a cautionary word is, while a good coating of glaze helps with the richness, too much leads to problems. Do a finger test of the thickness and limit the dipping time accordingly. Setters should be coated with kilnwash, particularly for speckled clays and especially for BRT. In spite of my preference to exclude BRT from firings, its use continues so please, when using BRT, provide your own setters well coated with kiln wash. Another of the clays used had spectacular spiral fractures to 3 large bowls. This clay was not sourced from the club though I believe it was a white stoneware the club has stocked in the past. Identification marks on work was much improved over that in previous firings which was pleasing to see and made pricing up the work a much easier task. Please keep that going. The new shelving for gas-fired work was full and made for a full kiln, with just one platter left for next firing. That gives us a better guide as to the amount of work instead of the combination shelf unit and table we had before. The wider spacing of the shelves makes for easier removing for the loading. So thanks to the team who installed that, and all the other new shelving. 1/2 Day Workshop 1pm - 3pm $175 Monday 26th June, 2023 Come and learn the fundamentals of Bonsai, and create your own miniature tree to take home. Each participant will receive a bonsai kit at the workshop, this includes a pre-prepared plant, bonsai pot, soil, wires etc. If you prefer to make your own pot you are welcome to. The pots are 8 inch rectangle/oval sort of shape (25cm x20cm) and about 6-7cm tall with a couple of holes in the base. This bonsai workshop is designed by Steven from Mini Gardens Bonsai NZ. Steven will run through the process of how to set up the tree into a bonsai. The exhibitors for May 2023 are:
Opening night will be Friday, 5th May at 5:30pm. Please come along to the opening and invite your friends and family as they will have the first pick of all the sensational work produced by Jean, Ramila and our members. We would love to see you there. Lynne Corkin has formed the new Clay Team. This new team will coordinate all clay for purchase.
A member of the Clay Team will be at the rooms every Saturday between 10am and midday for you to purchase clay. Outside those times, we would like all members to email: clayotakipottery@gmail.com to tell the Clay Team what clay you would like to purchase before you depart for the rooms. The Clay Team will be able to tell you if your clay is in stock, offer an alternative if it has sold out, and/or tell you when new stock may arrive. The Clay Team will tell you when your clay will be available to pick up and complete payment. Your clay will be left on the shelf outside the Clay Room doors for you to collect. A sales slip will be attached to your clay and you will just have to complete payment with cash, EFTpos or online before you leave the rooms. Tutors will no longer have access to the clay room. Keys to the room will only be held by members of the new Clay Team. We will still charge the 5% penalty for having to chase up any non-payment. After such a successful event last year the club will again run the event with some minor changes. There will be 90 spaces. Club members have priority until May 14th. Registration $60 includes GST. Registration is free for young people. A space will be set aside for young people to exhibit their work. ALL work must be for sale. One club member can pay for a space and share it with other members. EVERY EXHIBITOR, including young people, must fill in a registration form (same as for the Festival of Pots) with a 3-digit code listing items for sale. You will need to provide two copies when you arrive to set up your work. Commission is 15%. Trestle tables are available at $10 each Display panels for display : 2400 X 1200 @ $40; 1200 X 1200 @ $20. Set up and pack up : Set up is Wednesday 12 July between 11am – 8pm. Pack up is Saturday 15 July between 4pm – 7pm. It will be great if we can have people working in the rooms during the event. The “Have a Go” activities were very popular and we would like to run them again. We will need help to set up the venue (same as last year) and pack down on Sunday, 16 July. There is a race day on the 14th and Kiwi Kai will have their food truck on site. It would be wonderful if Tutors would encourage their students to get together as a group to participate. We encourage new members to get involved and experience the joy of seeing that other people like your work enough to buy it. A great encourager! Also a great motivator to have work ready for the Kapiti Arts Trail in November and the Festival of Pots and Garden Art in January 2024. To register https://www.otakipotteryclub.org/star-glaze.html Please make payment to Otaki Pottery Club 38-9003-0784227-11, putting your surname in the Particulars box, and Starglaze as the code |
