Advanced Wheel Class
Welcome to the Advanced Throwing - Intensive throwing course, which is perfect for potters who want to take their skills to the next level. Potters would have already taken a Continuing Wheel class or have suitable experience throwing.
This course will be taught by Jenny Turnbull, a highly experienced tutor who has designed the course to stretch your abilities in form and technique.
The course consists of 4 lessons, which will be held fortnightly on Wednesdays, with each lesson lasting 3.5 hours. The course is divided into weekly topics, with each week focusing on a particular type of pottery form and technique. |
Here is a breakdown of what you will be covering during each week in Term 2, 2023:
Week 1: Cylinders using 800 grams
Week 2: Spherical forms : Lids and galleries using 1.2kgs
Week 3: Bottle forms : Sectional, paddling, altering 800gm +
Week 4: Bakers to bowls : throwing and altering forms on the wheel 2kg+
Group discussions and evaluations to help develop personal directions.
Week 1: Cylinders using 800 grams
- Making a set of mugs and jugs, finishes by hand or trimming, looking at different handles & spouts.
- Practising repetitive throwing.
- Developing a personal way of finishing pieces, looking at rims and feet/surface and throwing marks/using tools.
Week 2: Spherical forms : Lids and galleries using 1.2kgs
- Making teapots, pouring vessels, and designing and perfecting the making of a teapot or any chosen pouring form.
- Making spherical forms, vases, galleries and lids.
Week 3: Bottle forms : Sectional, paddling, altering 800gm +
- Throwing bottle forms in sections.
- Altering forms, faceting and fluting.
- Throwing and adapting forms, joining thrown shapes together.
- Adding slips at different stages, texturing the clay on the wheel.
Week 4: Bakers to bowls : throwing and altering forms on the wheel 2kg+
- Learning to throw larger amounts of clay.
- Combining wheel and texturing slab building techniques.
- Adding lugs and handle & feet attachments.
Group discussions and evaluations to help develop personal directions.
Please note that each term, Jennifer will focus on different advanced skills to help you grow and expand your pottery abilities.
