RE-CLAYED celebrates transformation, sustainability, and creative reinvention
At the centre of this exhibition is the work of the Ōtaki Pottery Club’s Clay Recycling Team. Within the studio, leftover clay from classes and member projects is carefully reclaimed and reprocessed, ensuring valuable material is reused rather than discarded. This thoughtful practice reduces waste, lowers disposal costs, and conserves the significant energy and water required to manufacture new clay.
The ceramic works showcased here reflect that same philosophy of renewal, where materials are given a second life through creativity and craftsmanship. The Clay Recycling team is made up of many members, those exhibiting are Gemma Ball, Kylie Van Dyke, Susan Williams, Sandra Anderson, Luke Dinneen, Helen Pizzini, Fenella Burt and Christine Fagan.
Joining the exhibition are guest painters Sarah Mills and Sienna Fuller. Their paintings bring a dynamic layer of colour, mood, and expression, creating a lively dialogue between clay and canvas.
Sarah Mills is an emerging artist based in Waikanae Beach, working primarily with acrylic paint on card, and occasionally on canvas. Her practice centres on a deep exploration of colour — how it interacts, layers, and builds to create depth, movement, and emotional resonance within a piece.
Introduced to painting at a young age as a creative outlet, Sarah recently returned to her practice with renewed focus and intention. Her work reflects both a rediscovery and a refinement of that early passion, embracing bold palettes and layered compositions to evoke atmosphere and feeling.
Sienna Fuller is a 15 year old budding artist and this will be her first exhibition. She has grown up around creativity and is equally at home working in clay, drawing, fashion design, and painting. Known for her thoughtful eye and natural sense of form, she has a particular strength in clay sculpture and expressive drawing.
Sienna is currently taking Sarah Brock’s adult clay sculpture class, further developing her skills and confidence in three dimensional work. Alongside her painting practice, she has recently begun exploring photography, continuing to expand her creative horizons.
This exhibition marks an exciting milestone in her artistic journey.
Together, the works explore the beauty of reinvention, and the creative possibilities that unfold when we are willing to step forward and put ourselves out there.
