Glazing & Surface Decoration with Margaret Hunt
For Term 1 Margaret Hunt is going to alter her normal Hand Building / Surface decoration to address this need.
Here's a breakdown of what students can expect to learn and do in Margaret Hunt's class. Understanding Glazes: Students will learn the fundamental components that make up a glaze, including the various raw materials and their functions in glaze formulation. Making Clear Glaze: Margaret will guide students on how to create a clear glaze, which is a foundational glaze used in pottery to achieve a glossy, transparent finish. Adding Colour to Glazes: Students will explore the use of stains and oxides to add colour to glazes, allowing them to create a variety of vibrant and unique ceramic pieces. Engobes as Alternatives to Slip: Margaret will teach students how to mix an engobe, which is an alternative to slip. Engobes can be applied to bisque ware, enhancing the surface texture and adding decorative elements. Application Techniques: The class will cover different methods for applying glazes, coloured slips, stains, underglazes, and oxides. Students will learn different methods like spraying and layering, and possibly using resists to create interesting surface effects. Kiln Firing Methods: Students will explore the differences between electric and gas kiln firing. Understanding these variations in firing processes is crucial for achieving specific results in ceramics. Creating Testers for Gas Kiln: Each student will create testers to be fired in the gas kiln. This practical exercise will allow them to observe how their glazes and pottery pieces react to this specific firing method. |
Pottery Projects:
Each student will be required to create three pottery pieces—a jug, a vase, and a bottle. They can choose to use either hand-building techniques or the pottery wheel to shape their pieces. Application of Glazing Methods: The jug, vase, and bottle projects will serve as canvases for students to apply the glazing methods they have learned in the class. This practical application will help them see how different techniques affect the final appearance of their pottery. |
Overall, Margaret's class offers a well-rounded exploration of glazing and pottery techniques, providing students with the knowledge and skills to create unique and visually appealing ceramic artworks. It also emphasises hands-on experience and experimentation, which are essential for honing one's pottery skills.
