Harriet Bright

I have been teaching the Tuesday evening beginner wheel class at the Ōtaki pottery club for the last 2 terms, and love taking the classes.

We work on the basic skills. Wedging and centring, throwing simple cylinders bowls and plates, along with trimming,  making handles and glazing. Each class involves a demonstration, followed by working with students individually at their own level. The classes have a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

As a studio potter I make things to be held and used on a daily basis. Pottery that is beautiful and feels right in your hand is a pleasure and creates a connection between the potter and the user. I find great satisfaction from the process of trying to make work that has that magic 'something'.

My background is in painting and drawing. After 20 years as a visual artist I began to work on the pottery wheel about 4 years ago, and have recently become a full-time potter. I find the meditative focus of wheel-work combined with the ongoing creative challenge enjoyably addictive.
