Class Details - Term 2:
Sculpting a human figure

In this class you’ll sculpt two small, max 24cm high, figures that can be fired in a kiln.

Using a simple method she learnt at a class with Philippe Faraut, Sarah will show you how to create a figure with a string armature that burns out in the kiln - this means that the figure does not necessarily have to be hollowed out. The only limit to the pose you can put your figure into, is the strength of the clay. These design considerations will be discussed in the class.

In this class you will learn:

Proportions of the figure
Basics of gesture to make the figure look realistic
Placement of main masses and muscle groups
The skills to be able to build a simple figure using this method in the future
Depending on the speed individual students work at, you will make two full figures in the class, fire them, and give at least one an oxide wash

Tools and Materials:
Otaki Pottery Club will provide essential tools and materials, including a banding wheel, rolling pin, clay knife, and more.

Prerequisites:
No prior experience is necessary, but a fundamental understanding of handling and joining clay will be helpful.

Future Topics:
Stay tuned for exciting future topics during term 3 and 4: Capturing the essence of and animal's face, full body animal anatomy, and much more. We're open to exploring a variety of sculpting themes based on student interest.
