Continuing Wheel Class (Level 2)

If you're semi experienced potter looking to improve your throwing skills, the Continuing Wheel Classes may be just what you need.
This 8-week class is designed for those who have either completed the beginners class or have sufficient experience in throwing on the wheel.

Over the course of the class, you'll have the opportunity to work with larger amounts of clay and create more complex forms.

You'll also learn techniques for trimming, glazing, and decorating your pieces.

By the end of the course, you'll be able to confidently create larger cylinders, bowls, and plates, experiment with slip decorating on greenware, and have a better understanding of glazes suitable for different clays.

Items that students will learn to make:

  • Larger bowls, cylinders, and platters
  • Identical forms
  • Lids and galleries, small and large
  • Necks, spouts, and handles
  • Closed forms and combination forms
  • Chip and dip platters and cake plates
  • Teapots

Techniques that will be covered:

  • Improving wedging skills
  • Throwing larger pieces of clay up to 2kg
  • Throwing agate-ware with coloured clay
  • Improving trimming skills
  • Using slips/underglazes with sgraffito techniques on greenware
  • Clay and glaze fits, and different temperatures
  • Wax resist and latex techniques
  • Glazing techniques with a focus on food safety in glazes.
  • Reduction and oxidation firing options
  • Critiques during a show and tell session on the last lesson of each term, covering any glazing issues and aesthetics of form, which is a helpful learning tool.

If you're interested in continuing to improve your wheel throwing skills and taking on larger projects, we invite you to enrol in our Continuing Wheel Classes.

With our experienced tutors and 8-week program, you'll have the opportunity to learn a range of new techniques, experiment with decorating and glazing, and create beautiful pieces you'll be proud of.
