About the Workshops: First Workshop - September 21st: Textured Slab Building Workshop Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Cost: $175 Description: Explore the realm of clay inclusions and surface textures, experimenting with techniques such as texture making, sprigs, and bas relief. Learn to incorporate combustibles for unique effects (subject to firing regulations) and master the art of soft slab construction into vessel forms. Work with white Raku clay or similar hand-building clay to create stunning pieces enhanced with dry brushed slips and underglazes.
Second Workshop - September 22nd: Closed Form Slab Building Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Cost: $175 Description: Dive into the world of closed form slab building using templates, focusing on precise hand-building techniques to create flawless structures. Explore surface decoration using coloured slips and underglazes, incorporating mono printing techniques to add depth and character to your creations.
About Jane McCulla: Jane McCulla is a highly accomplished ceramic artist with a wealth of experience and expertise. Graduating with a 1st Class BA Hons in Fine & Applied Art from the University of Ulster, Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 2006, Jane has been a prominent figure in the New Zealand ceramics community since immigrating in 2009.
For seven years, she served as the Canterbury/Westland Regional Council Member and Vice President of the Ceramics Association of NZ, demonstrating her commitment to nurturing and promoting ceramic arts in the region. Jane's passion for teaching extends nationwide, as she conducts classes and workshops, sharing her knowledge and skills with enthusiasts of all levels.
From her studio in Diamond Harbour, Jane creates breathtaking stoneware clay forms, characterised by fluid textures that evoke themes of geology, archaeology, and human interaction with the landscape over time. Her dedication to her craft has been recognised through various awards, including a prestigious Portage Merit Award in 2013.
