OPC GAS KILN UPDATE

1/9/2022

The last gloss firing of the updraft kiln was on July 28.  The kiln was very tightly packed and included some work for the DCA students.  The results from the firing were excellent.

There were a few pots that didn’t fit into the firing.  On the shelves there were also a number of test glaze pieces and some work more suited to the variable temperatures achieved in the updraft kiln This work has been cleared with an updraft kiln firing.
There have also been 2 bisc firings of the downdraft kiln which has helped in clearing a build-up of pots resulting from one electric kiln being out of commission.
A firing of the updraft kiln was scheduled for the middle of September but as there is a limited amount of work on the shelves at present this has been postponed 2 weeks as follows:
  • Work for firing on shelves in kiln room by noon, Monday 26 September
  • Loading Tuesday 27th September, commencing 2pm
  • Firing Thursday 29th September, all day from 8.30am
  • Unloading Saturday 1st October, 2pm

These dates are subject to there being sufficient work available to fill the kiln and this can only be assessed in advance if work is loaded onto the shelves when it is ready for firing.  Our target is to fire once a month but this is seldom achieved.

One thing to note please, is adding identifying marks on each piece. Without an identifier the pots cannot be charged to the individual accounts. In future pots without identification will be put to one side.

NOTICE RE NEXT GAS FIRING

11/6/2022

The gas firing scheduled for June 16th has been postponed because there are not enough pots available to make a kiln load. Hopefully this advance notice will save members from a last minute rush to get glazing completed for firing on that date.

The new date set for a firing is Thursday July 28, work to be on shelves by noon on Monday 25th for loading Tuesday 26th, 2pm. Unloading Saturday 30th 2pm.

It is good to have the work on the shelves a week in advance of the above dates so we can confirm that there is demand for a firing.

POSTPONED GAS FIRING

3/5/2022

We are postponing the gas firing scheduled for May 4th as there have been very few pots received so far. The updraft kiln is quite large and typically requires about 140 pots to warrant a firing. There is nothing to indicate that the additional pots still needed will be delivered by the Monday 2nd deadline.

The May firing has been rescheduled as follows:

·         all work on shelves by 12 noon, Monday 9th May

·         loading will be completed Tuesday 10th May from 2pm

·         firing Wednesday 11th May (all day, starting 7.45am, completed about 5pm)

·         unloading Friday 13th May 2pm

This firing will still be dependent on there being sufficient work to fill the kiln.
